Laminate Teeth Veneers: Types, Procedure and Cost

Last updated on March 30th, 2026

Laminate teeth veneers are ultra-thin ceramic shells, typically 0.3 to 0.5 mm thick, bonded to the front surface of the teeth to correct discolouration, chipping, gaps, and irregular shape. Unlike crowns, they preserve most of the natural tooth structure, making them one of the most conservative options in cosmetic dentistry and the established choice for front-tooth aesthetic restoration.

This guide covers the three material options available (E-max, feldspathic porcelain, and composite), what the 2-appointment clinical procedure involves, how long results last, and what costs look like in Turkey compared to the UK. A systematic review published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine reported a 10-year cumulative survival rate of 95.5% for porcelain laminate veneers across 6,500 restorations, and E-max lithium disilicate, the most widely used material, carries a flexural strength of 470 to 530 MPa.

What Are Laminate Teeth Veneers?

Laminate teeth veneers are custom-made, wafer-thin ceramic shells bonded to the front surface of the teeth to improve their colour, shape, or alignment. The term laminate refers to the layered structure of the ceramic material: each veneer is typically between 0.3 mm and 0.7 mm thick, making it one of the most conservative restorations available in cosmetic dentistry.

Unlike dental crowns, which require significant reduction of the tooth on all sides, laminate veneers cover only the visible front surface, preserving most of the natural tooth structure. The bonding process uses a strong dental adhesive that fuses the porcelain directly to the enamel, creating a restoration that is virtually indistinguishable from a natural tooth.

Once bonded, the veneer becomes part of the tooth surface. The translucency of modern ceramics allows light to pass through, closely replicating natural enamel, giving patients results that look natural in all lighting conditions.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Laminate Veneers?

A good candidate for laminate veneers is someone with generally healthy teeth and gums who wants to correct purely aesthetic concerns, such as discolouration, minor chips, gaps, or slightly uneven teeth.

Laminate veneers are particularly well-suited for:

  • Permanently stained or discoloured teeth that do not respond to whitening
  • Chipped or mildly worn front teeth
  • Small gaps between the front teeth (diastema)
  • Slightly crooked or irregularly shaped teeth
  • Teeth that appear too small in proportion to the gum line

Patients with bruxism (teeth grinding) may require careful assessment, as the biting forces involved can chip or fracture veneers over time. Active gum disease and significant skeletal misalignment also need to be addressed before any veneer placement. At Maltepe Dental Clinic, a comprehensive clinical assessment is conducted during the initial consultation to determine whether laminate veneers are the appropriate treatment for each patient’s situation.

What Types of Laminate Veneers Are Available?

Laminate veneers are produced in three main material options: E-max (lithium disilicate) porcelain, feldspathic porcelain, and composite resin, each differing in strength, translucency, preparation requirements, and cost.

The table below compares E-max porcelain, feldspathic porcelain, and composite resin across the four factors that matter most to patients: thickness, strength, lifespan, and number of clinical visits required

E-max Laminate Veneers

E-max laminate veneers are made from lithium disilicate glass ceramic, a material valued for its combination of strength and translucency. With a flexural strength of approximately 470-530 MPa, E-max is significantly stronger than traditional feldspathic porcelain while still allowing light to pass through, closely mimicking natural tooth enamel. This makes E-max the dominant choice for anterior restorations where both aesthetics and durability are priorities.

Feldspathic Porcelain Veneers

Feldspathic porcelain veneers are hand-layered by dental technicians and offer a very high level of aesthetic customisation, particularly in replicating the natural colour gradations within a tooth. They are more fragile than E-max but remain a preferred choice when the most natural optical result is the priority and the patient’s bite poses a low fracture risk.

Composite Veneers

Composite veneers, while not ceramic, are worth noting as a more affordable, reversible alternative that can be applied directly to the tooth in a single visit. They are an option for patients who prefer a lower-cost or temporary solution before committing to porcelain.

What Does the Laminate Veneer Procedure Involve?

The laminate veneer procedure is typically completed in 2 appointments over 5 to 7 days.

First Appointment: Consultation and Tooth Preparation

The dentist examines the teeth and takes digital impressions or scans. A minimal amount of enamel is removed from the front surface of each tooth, usually no more than 0.3 to 0.5 mm, to create space for the veneer. The amount removed is carefully controlled to ensure the final restoration sits naturally in line with the adjacent teeth. Temporary veneers are placed to protect the prepared surfaces while the permanent veneers are fabricated in the laboratory.

At Maltepe Dental Clinic, Digital Smile Design technology is used to plan the aesthetic outcome before any preparation begins, allowing patients to preview their new smile.

Second Appointment: Bonding

When the permanent veneers are ready, the temporary veneers are removed. The dentist tries on each veneer, checks the fit, shape, and shade, and makes any necessary adjustments. The tooth surface is etched, a bonding agent is applied, and the veneer is bonded permanently using a light-cured adhesive. Each tooth is individually checked for bite alignment before the appointment is complete.

The full in-clinic phase, including both appointments and a follow-up check, can typically be completed within a single trip to Istanbul for patients travelling from abroad.

How Long Do Laminate Veneers Last?

Laminate veneers can last between 10 and 15 years with proper care, and in some cases even longer, depending on the material used and the patient’s oral habits.

A systematic review1 published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine reported a 10-year cumulative survival rate of 95.5% for porcelain laminate veneers, based on 6,500 restorations from 25 clinical studies. E-max veneers in particular have shown strong long-term performance in clinical studies, with their high flexural strength reducing the risk of fracture compared to traditional feldspathic materials.

Longevity is influenced by several practical factors:

  • Maintaining consistent oral hygiene, including brushing, flossing, and regular dental check-ups
  • Avoiding biting directly into very hard foods with the veneered teeth
  • Wearing a night guard if you grind your teeth during sleep
  • Attending regular reviews to monitor the bonding margins and surrounding gum health

Veneers do not decay, but the margins where the veneer meets the natural tooth can be vulnerable to decay if oral hygiene is poor. Consistent home care is therefore important throughout the restoration’s lifespan.

Amy from the UK had her E-max laminate veneers placed at Maltepe Dental Clinic five years ago. In this video, she returns to share how her results have held up and why she came back to complete her smile with the bottom teeth.

What Are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Laminate Veneers?

The main advantage of laminate veneers is that they deliver a dramatic, long-lasting aesthetic result while preserving most of the natural tooth structure.

Advantages

  • Highly conservative preparation, removing only 0.3 to 0.5 mm of enamel
  • Outstanding aesthetic result, replicating the translucency and colour depth of natural enamel
  • Stain-resistant surface that maintains its colour over time
  • Strong and durable, particularly with E-max ceramic, with approximately 400 MPa flexural strength
  • Treatment completed in just 2 clinical appointments
  • No-prep or minimal-prep options available in suitable cases

Disadvantages

  • Enamel reduction is irreversible in most standard cases
  • Not suitable for patients with significant bite problems or severe bruxism without prior treatment
  • Can chip if subjected to excessive biting force over time
  • Higher cost than composite alternatives
  • Requires replacement eventually, typically after 10 to 15 years

How Much Do Laminate Veneers Cost in Turkey?

Laminate veneers in Turkey typically cost between €250 and €500 per tooth, compared to £700 to £1,200 per tooth in the UK, representing a significantly lower overall cost for patients travelling from the UK.

The cost difference is driven by lower operational costs, not lower material or clinical quality. At Maltepe Dental Clinic, we use the same internationally recognised ceramic materials, including IPS E-max by Ivoclar Vivadent2, as leading clinics in Western Europe. Our in-house laboratory allows clinicians and technicians to collaborate closely throughout fabrication, maintaining strict quality control at every stage.

For patients having 10 veneers, the total saving compared to UK pricing can be substantial, even after flights and accommodation are factored in. Many patients from the UK combine their treatment with a few days in Istanbul, making the trip both practical and worthwhile.
