What is a Zirconium Dental Crown?

Similar to porcelain, zirconium is very aesthetic and highly durable. It is used as a foundation for ceramic dental fillings and enables working without a metal insert. With the help of zirconium crowns, we achieve very aesthetic and persistent solutions, hardly distinguishable from natural teeth. Unlike fillings and composite materials, zirconium crowns do not show purple-colored stains. The ceramic foundation enables light to shine through, which results in a natural and aesthetic look.

Zirconium has biological and antiallergenic characteristics. Therefore, it can also be used for patients who are allergic to metal.

Do You Want to Read More Details About Zirconium Crowns in Turkey?

We get a lot of questions from our patients. In the following paragraphs, you’ll find detailed information about Zirconium Crowns in general and your dental crown treatment in Turkey.

What Are Zirconium Crowns?

Zirconium Crowns are zirconia-alloyed ceramic caps, which cover your tooth and provide them a long-lasting aesthetic look.

Zirconium Crowns are getting more popular every day thanks to their strong material, natural color options, and aesthetic look. The metal-substructured crowns used in the past were not the best solution for an aesthetic-looking healthy mouth. They were not strong enough to last for long years, didn’t have the aesthetics like a zirconium crown, and were not %100 healthy to have in your mouth. Thanks to the cutting edge technology, we are now able to use zirconium alloys to strengthen the ceramic and make it more durable than metal alloys.

A dental crown procedure is a dental smile design method, which is made by using ceramic caps over your tooth or implant. People who have chipped, broken, or worn out teeth prefer this smile design method to get their smile back. Thanks to their hard material, zirconium dental crowns, or zirconia crowns, are more durable and less vulnerable to teeth grinding, which is a common problem for most patients.

Who Can Get Zirconium Dental Crowns in Turkey?

Everybody can have a dental crown treatment in Turkey. One should remember that not everybody must have a dental crown. Sometimes it’s enough to have laminate veneers, especially when you don’t have very crooked or chipped teeth. It’s a misunderstanding among our patients that teeth have to be filed down when they want to get a smile makeover. It’s only done where necessary. Even in these cases, we aim to keep it at a minimum level.
The eligibility for a dental crown should have been decided after the first examination of our dental team. In most cases, after getting your teeth photos by our patient consultants, our dentists make a thorough assessment of your case and decide whether your teeth are eligible for a veneer or a zirconium dental crown treatment.

If you have unhealthy, worn-out teeth, chipped, or broken teeth, you should consider getting a dental crown. Patients grinding their teeth and patients with dental implants should get dental crowns most of the time as well.
Another use of zirconium dental crowns is for dental bridges. A dental bridge is an alternative treatment for dental implants for missing teeth. To build a bridge over the missing tooth, the healthy teeth neighboring the missing tooth would be filed down and covered with crowns. Thus they build the pillars of the bridge.

Which Advantages Does Zirconium Dental Crown Treatment In Turkey Have?

Compared to other parts of the world, zirconia dental crown treatment in Turkey has various advantages. First, thanks to the state-of-the-art technology used at our clinic, there’s no compromise on the quality of the work done.

Second, it is less expensive than in Europe, the U.K, and the USA. Thanks to the lower living costs in Turkey, we can minimize our clinic costs. This helps us offer our patients more affordable prices than their home countries.

A unique advantage of having your teeth done at Maltepe Dental Clinic is our in-house lab. You can get your crowns done by our highly qualified and experienced dentists and talented lab technicians. Zirconia is a highly durable material, and when done by a competent technician, it can look very aesthetic. Aesthetics and fast results with your dental crowns are highly dependent on the close coordination of the dentist and the ceramist. An in-house lab provides this opportunity to our patients.
The last but not the least advantage of getting Zirconia dental crowns in Turkey is the chance of combining your treatment with a holiday and doing some shopping in the beautiful city of Istanbul.

What Types Of Dental Crowns Are Available?

There are different types of dental crowns available. Crowns can be made from zirconium, ceramic, porcelain, metal, composite resin, or porcelain-fused-to-metal.

All kinds of dental crowns have specific advantages and disadvantages. For instance, the resin crown is the cheapest procedure among all types. However, the resin is a relatively weak material. So crowns made from this material are vulnerable to wear and tear. Since it has a shorter lifespan, normally, we don’t recommend this crown type. Crowns made from precious metals like gold have a longer lifespan. And it is a more expensive procedure.

Ceramic, porcelain-based crowns are mostly used for front teeth restorations since they are not strong enough against heavy biting forces. To make porcelain crowns stronger, they can be supported by a metal structure. This type of dental crown is called porcelain-fused-to-metal dental crowns. One disadvantage of this option is that sometimes metal structure may be visible as a dark spot near the gum line, deteriorating your smile’s beauty.

Among all types of dental crowns, zirconium crowns have become so popular in the last few years. The strength, durability, and aesthetics of zirconium crowns provide a significant advantage to this option. They can be used not only for front teeth but also for molar teeth as well. Only the dentist can determine the best option for your specific case after making an examination.

What Is The Difference Between Zirconia Veneers And Zirconia Crowns?

Zirconia veneers mean zirconia full veneers, which is like a cap and covers your teeth all around. So basically, it is the same material and type of treatment as the zirconia crowns. Therefore, both mean the same; there is no difference in material and application. In some countries (e.g., Turkey), the term “veneer” is used for all dental restorations, and this is why there is a common confusion between zirconia veneers and zirconia crowns. If you are looking for a veneer instead of a crown treatment, please ask your dentist about the laminate veneer. Otherwise, there is always a risk of misunderstanding. Please be aware that laminate veneer design is a more complicated and delicate process, and not every dentist and dental lab can do laminate veneers.

What Is The Difference Between Dental Veneers And Zirconia Crowns?

Dental veneers are applied to the teeth’ front surface, like a thin shell, while zirconium (or Zirconia) crowns cover the teeth all around. It means that the teeth are filed down from the front surface and the tips for the veneers only as necessary. While for the zirconia crowns, the teeth are filed down all around, in other words, 360 degrees.

Additionally, the materials have different features. For veneers, the material is porcelain/EMAX, which has a translucent aspect and lets the light go through, providing the most natural look. For zirconia crowns, it is a little different. Zirconium is not transparent; however, when designed carefully and crafted with a porcelain/EMAX layer outside, it is possible to achieve a beautiful and natural smile.

In terms of aesthetic appearance, dental veneers and zirconium crowns offered by Maltepe Dental Clinic barely differ. Both are prepared at our in-house lab by talented and experienced ceramists by spending additional working hours for the best aesthetic result.

What Is The Difference Between Zirconia Crowns And Full Porcelain Crowns?

Zirconia and full porcelain are two very popular materials used for dental crowns. Fundamentally, the techniques used for zirconia crowns and full porcelain crowns are similar. But the difference is associated with the material used for the crowns.

Zirconia’s number one superiority is that it combines aesthetics and durability. Zirconia is a very strong and durable material. So zirconia crowns typically have a longer lifespan than porcelain crowns. Zirconia crowns are also very resistant to staining, and they don’t corrode.

Zirconia is a more opaque material compared to porcelain. So, in some cases, Zirconia may not be the best aesthetic solution for the restoration. Thanks to its translucency and texture, porcelain can provide natural-looking results. Color customization options are also wider when porcelain crowns are used. However, as mentioned above, when zirconia crowns are crafted with a porcelain/EMAX layer outside, it is possible to achieve a similar aesthetic look.

In sum, both options provide significant benefits. Only the dentist can recommend the best option for you after assessing your case and the position of the teeth that will be crowned.

What Are The Disadvantages Of Zirconium Crowns?

There are not many disadvantages of zirconium crowns. Some claim that zirconium crowns look less aesthetic than porcelain crowns or laminate veneers. This belief does not reflect reality. Zirconium crowns are used for two purposes: first, to treat the unhealthy and broken teeth, and second to align all the teeth and give an aesthetic look. Most clinics and labs overlook the aesthetic result part since patients’ general expectation is to fix the unhealthy teeth. However, it is possible to achieve an aesthetic result with zirconium crowns when an experienced and talented dental team makes the restoration. Therefore, Maltepe Dental Clinic’s zirconium crowns have no disadvantage compared to laminate veneers or porcelain crowns since our in-house ceramists and designers put long hours of work to give an aesthetic look. Please check our patients’ photos on our social media platforms. It is not possible to distinguish the zirconium crowns from EMAX laminate veneers.

Another disadvantage could be the amount of filing down of the teeth compared to laminate veneers. At Maltepe Dental Clinic, we adhere to the minimally invasive dentistry standards. We will recommend you do zirconium crowns or zirconium full veneers only if it is essential for the teeth’ health. If your teeth are healthy and not too crooked, we always recommend doing EMAX Veneers for cosmetic procedures.

Do you have questions?

Let us call you and answer them!

Which One Is Better, Emax Veneer Or Zirconium Dental Crowns?

We believe that they are two different treatments and should not be compared. Both are very durable and look very aesthetic. The difference is the treatment method. If your teeth are healthy and not too crooked, we highly recommend having EMAX laminate Veneers because your teeth will be filed down minimally to protect most of your teeth structure. If you have unhealthy teeth and they are too crooked, you only have one option: Zirconium crowns. EMAX Veneer is only applicable to healthy teeth. Please consult with your dentist. Our clinic and dentists adhere to international ethical standards. After assessing your case, we will give you a treatment recommendation.

In some rare cases, patients ask for a bright white and fake Hollywood smile. In that case, EMAX Veneer may not be the best choice since EMAX Veneer is a translucent material, and we cannot reach a pure white result with EMAX material. However, Zirconia is an opaque material and can give a faker and whiter result. Please inform us beforehand if you are interested in getting such a smile so that we can discuss your options.

How Many Zirconia Crowns Are Enough To Change My Smile?

The number of zirconia crowns to change your smile depends on your teeth’ dental condition, your expectations, and the width of your smile line. Sometimes, a significant improvement can be achieved with only four zirconia crowns. But depending on your teeth’ condition, we can recommend a full set of crowns as well.
At Maltepe Dental Clinic, we have done many smile designs by restoring only the upper four of six front teeth. When the problem (chipped/broken/worn-out teeth) is only about these teeth, by restoring them in harmony with the rest of your teeth, you can get a beautiful smile.
On the other hand, if you want to make a drastic change in your teeth’ shape, size, and color, the number of required Zirconia crowns increases. So the number of crowns needed to change your smile depends on your dental condition and expectations. Therefore we first listen to your concerns about your smile and make a thorough assessment. Then we decide on your customized treatment plan together with you.

Which Color Options Does The Zirconium Crown Have?

From Hollywood white to every natural tooth shade, giving any color to the zirconium crowns depends on the patient’s choice. All colors of EMAX or VITA color scales apply to zirconium crowns.

Which Technology Is Used For Zirconium Crowns In Turkey?

CAD/CAM is the best and most advanced technology to make zirconium crowns. CAD/CAM stands for Computer-Aided Design/ Computer-Aided Manufacturing. There are different types of CAD/CAM devices and methods of production. In general, the impression of the teeth is transferred to the computer. In the design stage, the smile designer uses a software tool to design the crowns virtually, and then the crowns are produced in the computerized milling machine. After milling, the stratification is done in high degree ovens. And then, the stage of art begins with the ceramist’s artistic touches phase. The ceramist applies EMAX and porcelain materials on the zirconium crowns to give them the best aesthetic look.

Most dental labs in Europe or Turkey use similar technologies. What makes the difference is the hands of the dental technicians. After the production process, they give an aesthetic look to the zirconium crowns like an artist. Lab technicians should be experienced and talented so that aesthetic and natural results can be achieved. In short, the best technology is not sufficient to reach the best aesthetic result. Ceramists’ talent and dentists’ experience are crucial parts of an excellent result.

Which Phases Does Zirconium Crown Treatment Have?

Typically a zirconium crown treatment requires three-four dental appointments.

In the first phase, after listening to the patient’s concerns and wants and conducting a thorough assessment, we prepare a customized treatment plan. Then we prepare the patient’s teeth for the zirconium crown treatment. And we take the impression of the prepared teeth. This impression is sent to the lab to proceed with the crown design process. At the first appointment, we place temporary crowns on your teeth. Until the permanent crowns are prepared and cemented into the patient’s mouth, these temporaries protect the teeth.
In the second phase, the zirconium crowns are designed and prepared in the dental lab. When the clinic has an in-house lab, technicians can complete this preparation process in 2-3 days. However, if the dentist works with an external lab, this process can take up to several weeks.

After the lab completes the zirconium crown design, the patient visits the dentist for the third phase. This appointment is for the rehearsal of the new zirconium crowns. In the rehearsal, we check two things: first, we show your teeth to you and get your opinion in terms of aesthetics. Second, the dentist checks the crowns if they fit perfectly to the teeth. Thanks to our in-house lab, any adjustment can be made in hours, and your teeth are ready for fitting. Your restorations are polished and cleaned for the last time. Then we cement your permanent crowns on your teeth and complete the treatment.
We ask the patients to test their teeth for 1-2 days as the new teeth might need some bite adjustment. Then we expect the patients to come back for the last check to adjust the bite at the clinic one last time.

How Long Do Zirconium Crowns Last?

Zirconium crowns have a lifetime of about 10-25 years. This lifespan can change depending on the quality of zirconium crowns, the quality of your dentist’s work, and how well you take care of them.

With proper dental care, you can increase the lifespan of your zirconium crowns. Anything that could damage your natural teeth could harm your crowns as well. Even though zirconium crowns are very durable restorations, their lifespan may shorten due to poor dental hygiene. You need to use dental floss every day and brush your teeth (including your gum) at least two times a day. In short, you need to maintain oral hygiene just as you do for your natural teeth.

How Shall I Take Care Of My Zirconium Crowns?

You should take care of your zirconium dental crowns just as you do your natural teeth. The daily routines of tooth brushing and flossing must continue. Zirconium crowns do not discolor, but to keep your teeth healthy and stain-free, you should regularly have your dental check-ups and dental cleaning.

Biting strong materials or nuts may harm your crowns; therefore, you should strongly avoid biting hard materials. Please take good care of your crowned teeth, exactly like other healthy teeth.

How Much Does Zirconium Crowns Cost In Turkey?

The cost of dental zirconium crowns in Turkey depends on the number of teeth required. You can visit our zirconium crown prices page to see the single prices. All the prices are transparent, and no additional costs are needed.

Our international patients department is happy to provide you with a free and non-binding quote and free online consultation. They will guide you through the process of making an appointment. During your consultation, you’ll be informed about the estimated cost of your smile design.

What Is The Difference Between Zirconium Crowns And Dental Implants?

They are entirely different things, different treatments, and different materials. But they are related to each other in Implant + Crown treatments.
Implants are the titanium screws placed in the jawbone to carry a crown or fixed denture on them. Basically, an implant is a replacement for the root of the tooth. Zirconium is the material used for the crowns or dentures to be fitted on the implants. If you have a missing tooth, a titanium implant is fitted first. Then 2-6 months later, a zirconium crown is fitted on top of the implant.

What Is The Difference Between Zirconium Crowns And Teeth Whitening?

Teeth whitening, also known as laser teeth bleaching, is applied when the patient has discolored teeth. It is considered as an alternative short-term solution to costly smile makeover treatments.

Teeth whitening occurs through a chemical reaction of the bleaching agent with the help of laser whitening technology. Maltepe Dental Clinic (MDC) uses USA brand Opalescence® chemical agent and the latest laser-whitening technology for teeth whitening treatment.

Each patient’s teeth respond differently to whitening treatments, and they will whiten at different degrees. Some stains are easier to treat than others. Teeth that are yellow or brown are easier to whiten than teeth that are grey or blue. In other words, the degree of whitening cannot be controlled during the whitening treatment. In some cases, teeth whiten up to 3-4 shades, and in some cases, only half shade.

As you see, teeth whitening is cost-effective, but you cannot select the desired color, and it lasts around one year. Then you need to do teeth whitening again. Furthermore, it can only be applied to specific stains and discolorations. Also, it does not change the shape of the teeth.
If you have a specific color request or would like to change your teeth’ shape, or if you have damaged, crooked, chipped teeth, you may consider zirconium crown or Laminate veneer treatment. Of course, the budget is a significant factor as well. And considering the budget issue, we highly recommend checking our price comparison pages because traveling to Turkey for zirconia options might be a more affordable option for many cases.

How Much Will My Teeth Get Filed Down?

Depending on your teeth’ positioning, the alignment, the degree of damage on the natural teeth, etc., your teeth are filed down all around, about 1-2 mm. For crooked or damaged teeth, this amount may increase. At Maltepe Dental Clinic, we adhere to minimally invasive dentistry standards. So we file down from the teeth as minimal as necessary.

Is Zirconium Crown Treatment In Turkey Painful?

Zirconium crown treatment is not a painful procedure. This treatment is performed under local anesthesia, and you don’t feel any pain at any phase of the treatment. You may only feel sensitivity on the gums surrounding the crowned teeth after the cementing step. This sensitivity and discomfort can last a couple of days. Rarely some patients have sensitivity lasting up to a month. But in general, sensitivity gradually goes down.

Can I Floss Between My Zirconium Crowns?

Yes, you can! Actually, you should! As we’ve mentioned before, your zirconium crowns firmly cover your natural teeth and should be taken good care of exactly like a regular tooth. Regular dental checks and daily flossing is good for your oral health and should not be neglected.

I Have An Overbite Or Crossbite; Can I Have It Fixed With Zirconium Crown Treatment?

Yes, it is possible. Overbite and crossbite are major dental issues, and depending on the severity of the case, orthognathic surgery might be required. In some cases, orthodontic (braces) treatment or zirconium crown treatment could be applied. Please send us your smile photos for a free consultation.

I Have Been Quoted For Veneers From Other Clinics, And You Have Recommended Zirconia Crowns. Why?

If you ask this question, you probably know that your teeth will be filed down more with zirconium crown treatment than with veneer treatment. Each case is different. There could be many reasons why we advise zirconium crowns for your smile. But please be aware that, especially in Turkey, veneer as a term is used for all prosthetic restorations. So, most dentists call crowns as veneers. Therefore, we highly recommend confirming if other clinics refer to laminate veneer or veneer in general. A laminate veneer is a thin shell material used to give a better aesthetic look to healthy teeth.
Our dentists will give you the most conservative treatment option depending on your case and your end-result expectations.

Why Are You Asking Me What I Want? Just Tell Me What I Need.

We get this question quite often. Here is the chance to explain why we need to listen to you. In dentistry and specifically in cosmetic dentistry, there are different treatment alternatives. If we listen to your expectations, we can develop the optimal treatment option for your case. For instance, a patient has a shifted midline, slightly crooked, but healthy teeth. If she expects us to correct the midline, we have to apply a different treatment. If she only cares about aligning the teeth and altering the teeth color, the treatment option changes completely. Therefore, please don’t hesitate to tell us what is in your mind and what bothers you most with your smile. Thus, we can come up with the best treatment solution possible for your unique case. Please remember, no two smiles are the same, as they shouldn’t be.
